Mark, our finance director, sits on the Board of Directors for Bluestone and plays a key role within the business, focusing on its commitment to development and growth.
“I am responsible for the accounts, underwriting, end of term, regulation, and systems development functions. I manage internal and external professionals, on and off-site workers and middle managers/supervisors. In addition, I have board responsibilities and am often working on wider product development. For example, I developed, sourced backers, and delivered a product in a sector that was already monopolised by one key player – the product created is refreshing, inspired by the ethics of the FCA and delivers value to the company.”
When asked what attracted him to working at Bluestone, Mark said, “At the time, Bluestone was only a small business but part of a wider group that was dynamic, looked after its employees and had good growth opportunities.”
Mark began his career delivering a paper round before becoming a trainee accountant. When he was younger, he had aspirations to become a bus driver.
“I just wanted to drive the Leyland Lynx MKII and enjoy the scenery whilst meeting new people.”
Prior to joining Bluestone in 2006, Mark spent his career within in the MoD, NHS, architecture, reprographics, design, education, recycling, haulage, retail and finance.
“My drive comes from the ethos that failure is not an option. I believe in balance and that hard work and determination will be rewarded.”
Mark spent a significant proportion of his childhood with his grandad who he greatly admired and respected.
“I often reflect on my grandad as one of the greatest sources of inspiration in my life; a person who taught me the meaning of respect, honour, and how to be a gentleman.”
Sport wasn’t Mark’s strongest subjects at school. In fact he managed to substitute it for another subject in years 10 and 11 – he would much rather spend his time with Lego, giving him the ability to create anything that was in his mind (often sci-fi related).
When he isn’t working, Mark enjoys jumping in the car, heading to Ingleton, and wandering the waterfall trails and caves with his children. He then travels over the hills to Brynmor for ice cream, down to Masham for a pint and bite to eat at the Blacksheep Brewery and then back home to relax whilst watching some binge worthy TV.
“I’m surprisingly good at remembering the most pointless and useless facts – oddly the ones that never seem to feature within pub quizzes!”
Mark would love to visit New Zealand and experience paragliding or skydiving at some point.
