‘Bluestone began as a small business and used finance to grow our own operation from a small team to an organisation of 50+ offering nationwide services, so we have first-hand knowledge of how effective finance can be when deployed in the right way.’
Our CEO, Phillip, sits on the Board of Directors for Bluestone and in addition to steering the company’s overall commercial strategy, he works to ensure that our ethos and values are upheld throughout our operation. This includes speaking with candidates during the recruitment process to ensure that anyone who joins our team shares our professional, client-focused, and ethical approach to service.

Phillip grew up in Wakefield and Doncaster where his strongest memories are of spending many happy hours playing in the fields around his estate.
‘One of the most important lessons I learnt from my childhood was that schools don’t teach you what you really need to know to live a happy and successful life. I enjoyed playing cricket and football - the sun always seemed to be shining – and I remember that I wanted to become a civil engineer building bridges.’
Between his childhood paper round and becoming CEO of Bluestone, Phillip had a successful career in law, private equity, and general management. This meant that when he became Bluestone’s CEO in 2007 Phillip brought years of experience in arranging finance for business acquisitions and restructurings including bridging finance, equity fundraisings, secured loans, invoice discounting and cash flow lending in addition to asset finance.
‘What I enjoy most about Bluestone is the fact that we make a real difference to our clients. It’s also important that I genuinely like the people I work with, and that each person in the company shares the same motivation: to make a positive impact through ethical and effective finance that helps organisations and, by extension, the UK economy to thrive.’
If you could change 3 things about the world, what would they be? ‘More honesty, kindness, and greater understanding of others. A little less ego and envy would be helpful too!’
Which person do you most admire and why? ‘I admire people I know who are honest, kind, hard-working and fun.’
What is your biggest pet peeve? ‘People who are not the above.’
What’s your life motto? ‘You only get out what you put in.’
Fun fact: Phillip is known for his encyclopaedic knowledge of Yorkshire place names and is surprisingly good at ironing.
